এ উপলক্ষে স্বাধীনতার মহান স্থপতি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদনের জন্য দূতাবাসের বঙ্গবন্ধু মিলনায়তনে বিস্তারিত কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করা হয়।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ ইমরান কর্তৃক দূতাবাস প্রাঙ্গনে জাতীয় পতাকা অর্ধনমিত করে উত্তোলনের মাধ্যমে দিবসের কর্মসূচি শুরু হয়। এসময় দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীবৃন্দ উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

পরে কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীদের সাথে নিয়ে রাষ্ট্রদূত জাতির পিতার আবক্ষ মূর্তিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন এবং এই মহান নেতার প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা প্রদর্শনের জন্য কিছুক্ষণ নীরবে দাড়িয়ে থাকেন।পরে মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি মোঃ সাহাবুদ্দিন, মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা, পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ড. এ.কে. আবদুল মোমেন এবং পররাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী মোঃ শাহরিয়ার আলম প্রদত্ত বাণী পাঠ করে শোনান মিনিস্টার (ইকনোমিক) মোঃ মেহেদি হাসান, মিনিস্টার (কর্মাস) মোঃ সেলিম রেজা, কাউন্সেলর ও দূতালয় প্রধান মোঃ মনিরুজ্জামান এবং কাউন্সেলর শামীমা ইয়াসমিন স্মৃতি।

এ উপলক্ষে পরে বঙ্গবন্ধুর জীবন ও কর্মের উপর একটি প্রামাণ্যচিত্র প্রদর্শন এবং এক আলোচনাসভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।

আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ ইমরান জাতির পিতা এবং ১৫ আগস্টের হত্যাযজ্ঞের অন্যান্য শহিদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন। তিনি বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা অর্জনের জন্য ভাষা আন্দোলন থেকে শুরু করে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ পর্যন্ত বঙ্গবন্ধুর মহান আত্মত্যাগ ও ২৪ বছরের দীর্ঘ সংগ্রামের কথা তুলে ধরেন।

রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান বলেন বঙ্গবন্ধুর ডাকে সাড়া দিয়ে মুক্তিকামী বাঙালি জনতা ১৯৭১ সালের ২৬ মার্চ অস্ত্র হাতে তুলে নেন এবং জাতির পিতার নেতৃত্বে নয় মাসের রক্তক্ষয়ী মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পর ১৬ ডিসেম্বর স্বাধীনতার লাল সূর্য ছিনিয়ে আনেন।

১৫ আগস্টকে বাঙালি জাতির ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে কলঙ্কজনক অধ্যায় হিসেবে অভিহিত করে রাষ্ট্রদূত বঙ্গবন্ধুকে হারানোর শোককে শক্তিতে রূপান্তরিত করতে এবং তার স্বপ্নের সুখী-সমৃদ্ধ সোনার বাংলা গড়তে ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে কাজ করার জন্য সকলের প্রতি আহ্বান জানান।রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান উল্লেখ করেন বঙ্গবন্ধুর সুযোগ্য কন্যা মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বাংলাদেশকে বিশ্বের বুকে একটি উন্নত ও সমৃদ্ধ জাতি হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠায় জাতির পিতার অসমাপ্ত কাজ সম্পন্ন করতে নিরলসভাবে পরিশ্রম করে যাচ্ছেন। তিনি প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশকে একটি উন্নত ও সমৃদ্ধশালী ‘স্মার্ট বাংলাদেশে’ পরিণত করতে নিজ নিজ অবস্থান থেকে কাজ করার জন্য সকলের প্রতি অনুরোধ জানান।

মিনিস্টার (কনস্যুলার) মোহাম্মদ হাবিবুর রহমান আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে স্বাধীনতার জন্য বঙ্গবন্ধুর দীর্ঘ সংগ্রাম ও মহান আত্মত্যাগের ওপর আলোকপাত করেন। তিনি মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পর যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত বাংলাদেশকে গড়ে তোলার লক্ষ্যে জাতির পিতার বিভিন্ন যুগান্তকারী পদক্ষেপের কথাও তুলে ধরেন।

পরে দূতাবাস আয়োজিত বঙ্গবন্ধুর জীবন ও কর্মের উপর আয়োজিত রচনা প্রতিযোগিতায় বিজয়ীদের মধ্যে পুরস্কার তুলে দেন রাষ্ট্রদূত। বাংলাদেশী প্রবাসী বিভিন্ন বয়সের উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক শিশু প্রতিযোগিতায় অংশ নেয়।

বঙ্গবন্ধু ও ১৫ আগস্টের হত্যাযজ্ঞের অন্যান্য শহিদের এবং মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সকল শহিদের বিদেহী আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করে বিশেষ মোনাজাতের মাধ্যমে অনুষ্ঠানের সমাপ্তি ঘটে। অনুষ্ঠানটি পরিচালনা করেন ফার্স্ট সেক্রেটারী মোঃ আতাউর রহমান।

এর আগে বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাস জাতির পিতার 48তম শাহাদত বার্ষিকী উপলক্ষে 11 আগস্ট জুমার নামাজের পর ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিস্থ ইসলামিক সেন্টারে এক দোয়া ও বিশেষ প্রার্থনার আয়োজন করে। Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC observes National Mourning Day: Ambassador Imran urges for materializing Bangabandhu’s dream of building ‘Sonar Bangla’

Hakikul Islam Khokan,Senior Correspondedt USA:The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC today observed the National Mourning Day, commemorating the 48th martyrdom anniversary of greatest Bangalee of all time, Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due respect and solemnity.

The Embassy arranged elaborate programs at the Bangabandhu Auditorium to pay deep homage to Bangabandhu, the architect of independence.

The day’s programs began with the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag at half-mast in front of Chancery by Ambassador Muhammad Imran. Officials and employees of the Mission were present on the occasions.

Later, the Ambassador, accompanied by the officials, placed a floral wreath at the bust of Father of the Nation and observed a moment of silence for paying homage to Bangabandhu.

The messages issue by Hon’ble President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam were readout by Minister (Economic) Md Mahedi Hasan, Minister (Commerce) Md Salim Reza, Counsellor & Head of Chancery Mohammad Moniruzzaman and Counsellor Shamima Yeasmin Smrite. A documentary on the life and works of Bangabandhu was screened, which was followed by a discussion session.

Taking part in the discussion, Ambassador Muhammad Imran paid glowing tributes to the Father of the Nation and other martyrs of the August 15 carnage. He narrated Bangabandhu’s dedication and 24-year struggle from the Language Movement to the War of Liberation to achieve long-cherished independence of Bangladesh.

Ambassador Imran said responding to the call of Bangabandhu, the freedom-loving Bangalee people took arms on March 26 in 1971 and brought the reddish sun of independence on December 16 under the leadership of Bangabandhu after the nine-month bloody Liberation War.

Terming the 15th August as the most disgraceful chapter for the Bangalee nation, the Ambassador called upon all to transform grief of losing Bangabandhu into strength and to work unitedly to build a happy and prosperous “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal) as dreamt by the Father of the Nation.

Ambassador Imran mentioned that Bangabandhu’s able daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to complete the Father of the Nation’s unfinished task of establishing Bangladesh as a developed and prosperous nation in the world.He requested all to work from their respective positions to turn Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous “Smart Bangladesh” under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Taking part in the discussion, Minister (Consular) Mohammad Habibur Rahman focused on Bangabandhu’s great dedication and long struggle for country’s independence. He also highlighted Bangabandhu’s various epoch-making steps to rebuild the war-ravaged nation.

Later, the Ambassador handed over prizes among the winners of the Essay competition organized by the Embassy. A significant number of children of different age groups of Bangladeshi diaspora took part in the competition

The programs ended with offering a special prayer seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of the August 15 massacre as well as all martyrs of great Liberation War. First Secretary Md Ataur Rahman conducted the programs.

The Embassy earlier arranged a Doa and Special Prayer at the Islamic Centre in Washington DC after Juma prayers on 11 August on the occasion of the 48th Martyrdom Anniversary of the Father of the Nation
